I originally started doing this last semester so that i wouldn't get attached to what should just be studies and concentrate on learning but now it seems more beneficial to work on getting a finished piece from life sessions. I'm pretty happy with how my sense of color has developed, now I want to work on making the forms specific and detailed as well as some techniques i've never tried like glazing.

I just awoke from a very vivid dream. The first part I was in jail, but more like house arrest in an attic of a house with another guy. This other guy seemed to be an amalgamation of a few different cool older brother types. The warden was the guy who was the RA for me when I lived in the dorms. The first half of the dream revolved around the cool guy constantly trying to break out while I sat around thinking about escaping and thinking i was the anti cool hand luke who came broken. Theres a lot of weird dream stuff here, like escape tunnels that feel like they were carved out of fleshy rubber, which makes no sense anyway as i had envisioned us locked up in an attic space in the middle of a city. So anyway what finally gets me to escape is aliens. Yes, from my attic/prison window I see aliens attack from an old school isometric perspective. So the military shows up, but it's more like sci-fi shock troops than your standard military. I decide to leave but the warden says hes coming with and we're tethered together by an umbilical cord. We take some bizarre tunnel out of the house and by the time we get outside all the fighting is over.
There are still a lot of aliens (who are more like different types of triffids than greylings). I start talking to a group of them and it turns out that they just want to live in America/the world. I'm cool with this until they turn out to be bible thumping fanatics, though it's some kind of crazy space bible. The dream kind of took a turn for the odd there with the alien jahova's witnesses. I remember being very torn between letting the aliens stay because they were so polite but also not trusting their fanaticism, it was a big moral dilemma, even though it really wasn't up to me to let them stay or whatever.
So, from there the dream totally changed, I stepped through a doorway and all of a sudden i was in the dress rehearsal for a play, only this play was only for little people...only there weren't any little people. The play was about some kind of WW1 hospital setting where this Florence Nightingale like character was nursing this man back to health and simultaneously falling in love with him. The major conflict seemed to center around the fact that he had his junk blown off. It was very dramatic.

Then I woke up and told Petur to go to class, and he told me to fuck off. What a crazy dream.

Benito brought it up, and i meant to do it a long time ago...

but I'm lazy. as such it's not colored and it's just something I threw together as a warmup before i do a fine art head study (kirby is a great warm up for those)

I think later i'll try cleaning it up and coloring it. who knows!?

Ok so I've been thinking about this whole batman redesign thing. I tried to come up with a design of my own but I find myself really hitting a wall. The easy way out seemed to be just making it silly as the very concept of superheros in tights is silly. It's especially silly when you have a superhero that takes it's self as seriously as batman. Even to do silly would be a challenge to design anything really compelling as his classic costume is already the definition of silly. Turning away from silly there's trying to look at what batman's costume is supposed to convey, or what qualities of batman you find compelling. Jemma went with terror (http://oxboxer.livejournal.com/43690.html) and turned out a great costume. To me, however, batman as a character has never been about terror alone. In fact I never saw batman as being scary in that sense, more intimidating that scary. I always saw the costume as a maudlin element that bruce uses to confuse criminals. It's that, "what the fuck is going on" moment when the criminal's buddies start being pulled into dark shadows and they catch glimpses of some weird guy in a costume. It's the same fear that you get from a sadistic serial killer, they're not inhuman by any means but the fact they are human that makes them so upsetting. The cum shot of batman sequences is always when theres one guy left, then batman drags him up to the rafters by his ankles and interrogates him upside down, face to face.

This being my particular interpretation of the character, again it becomes clear that altering the costume would be fairly arbitrary. Everything I just described is realized just fine by the current costume. Aside from a practical redesign the only avenues i see left are more re-imaginings such as batman as a ww1 fighter ace, or batman as a french revolutionary, or batman by gaslight, or batman in soviet russia. All of those are fun but they're not really in the same spirit of redesigning the current batman.

so, in conclusion, i gave up.
